What would you do?

What would you do if..... is a familiar phrase in one of the popular R&B songs that is played on many of the radio stations that you like to listen to. Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot you never listen to "that kind of music". But what would you do if one morning you woke up and found out the following story was true in your life.

The *story was told of a person just like you or perhaps even just like me.. who came home from work one evening after a hard days work. After the enjoyment of a scrumptious meal with the family this person (just like you or perhaps even just like me) retired for bed and went to sleep.  While sleeping this person (just like you or perhaps even just like me) dreamed that the Lord took their weekly offering and multiplied it by ten and turned this amount into their weekly income.  What would you do if........excuse me let me continue the story. In no time at all this person lost all of their furniture, cell phone service was discontinued (no access), cable TV was gone and the repo man just picked up the car. This person was no longer able to take his family out to eat following the benediction at Worship Service to their favorite eating establishment. Now anybody in their right mind would wonder what can a person do with $100.00.(that is ten dollars times ten). Well the truth of the matter is that your Church is unable to do much either.

Well, what would you do if the Lord took your offerings and so called tithes and multiplied them by ten and that amount became your weekly income. (do the math). So the question is....What Would You Do, if God got tired of the tip that you give and decided to tip you instead.  If this person is you then pray that the Lord will teach you how to be a faithful and truthful steward of the resources he has blessed you with. Now if you know that you have not done your part to support the SBC Ministry you can start today. (You can give by clicking on the on-line giving tab)
*story adapted from the SBC Church bulletin 3/14/10 "what a horrible dream"

What are you giving up?

What are you giving up?

That is a question that comes up often during the Lenten season. Lent is the time that basically begins from Ash Wednesday and 40 weekdays leading up to Resurrection Sunday (Easter).  It is a time that one should be reflective repentant and responsive in prayer as we seek to get closer to the Lord.  We should take this period of time to consider how one can truly make meaningful changes in to their life by sacrificially abstaining from things that we enjoy, responsive to the leading of the Holy Spirit by engaging in prayer and service to our neighbor. So what are you going to give up to get close to God?  Now before you answer that let me suggest that it not be done just because it is that time of year and everybody is doing it. Nor should it be a personal convenience such as missing a few meals because you started a new diet (wink wink) and it just happen to be during Lent. The Lord really wants sincerity and so should you.You will be glad you did. See what the Prophet Joel shares in chapter 2:11-17 (The Message Bible Translation)

But there’s also this, it’s not too late—
God’s personal Message!—
“Come back to me and really mean it!
Come fasting and weeping, sorry for your sins!”
Change your life, not just your clothes.
Come back to God, your God.
And here’s why: God is kind and merciful.
He takes a deep breath, puts up with a lot,
This most patient God, extravagant in love,
always ready to cancel catastrophe.
Who knows? Maybe he’ll do it now,
maybe he’ll turn around and show pity.
Maybe, when all’s said and done,
there’ll be blessings full and robust for your God!
Blow the ram’s horn trumpet in Zion!
Declare a day of repentance, a holy fast day.
Call a public meeting.
Get everyone there. Consecrate the congregation.
Make sure the elders come,
but bring in the children, too, even the nursing babies,
Even men and women on their honeymoon—
interrupt them and get them there.
Between Sanctuary entrance and altar,
let the priests, God’s servants, weep tears of repentance.
Let them intercede: “Have mercy, God, on your people!
Don’t abandon your heritage to contempt.
Don’t let the pagans take over and rule them
and sneer, ‘And so where is this God of theirs?’ ”

If you have a sincere desire to be closer to the Lord, be for real.
God Bless you.

Your Bluetooth is Blinking in Church

Common Sense and a Spiritual Illustration on Technology. Are You Connected?

You know it seems like we just can't help but stay attached (connected) to all of the many technological devices that are available to us. The marketplace today, have lured us into an intoxicating addictiveness of 24/7 access. We love our sense of importance as it relates to e-mails, twitter, facebook, instant messaging and other social networking tools. We are glued to our devices anticipating the next beep, the next glow of the light (did I tell you that your bluetooth is blinking and it's distracting me), or vibration that let us know that we have been summons to inquire was it an e-mail, voicemail, alert etc.. I would like to invite you to observe the next time you are in Church (providing that you attend regularly) to witness how often someone forgets to put their phone on silent mode (and the ring tone is not Amazing Grace), or forget to take off their bluetooth (you've seen this I'm sure in the congregation, choir loft, pulpit). Oh, did I tell you that your bluetooth is blinking. Witness if you will while doing your observation that some folk have the the audacity to tweet, text, check e-mail and the sorts in the middle of Church service. (You are not guilty of this are you)? If so I must respectfully ask you to stop right now and discard your observational survey. Common sense would suggest that you could surely tune the craziness of the e-mail blitz, long enough to get spiritually refreshed. Perhaps you could leave a Greeting that says, "You have reached the voicemail box of one who decided to turn off my cell phone because I want to enjoy being involved in Worship) You know, perhaps a common sense and practical approach to this is to understand that you should be connected 24/7 (John 15: 1-10) with the Lord, and check his e-mail to us by checking out His Word (II Timothy 3:16).  Let's take out our bluetooths, turn off our cell phones and really listen to what the Holy Spirit is trying to communicate to you.
